DIY: Paint Your Own Pottery and The Pin Show

If you’re looking for something creative and “cool” to do and want to get a head start on those Christmas gifts, head out to Purple Glaze, Dallas’ own paint-your-own-pottery studio. That’s exactly what I did this past weekend with my friends. It was fun and easy, and come this Friday, my dog will have a new dish! Purple Glaze has plenty of options, from dinnerware to decorative items. Simply choose a piece, pick your colors and paint your pottery; the staff at Purple Glaze will take care of the rest. With the freedom to paint or write whatever you want, hand-painted pottery is much more personal than a store-bought item. Purple Glaze is located on the southwest corner of Preston and NorthWest Highway. The Pin Show is an independent fashion show created by Dallas designers Rachel Nichelson and Julie McCullough Kim. Over twenty independent designers and stylists from Texas and the South, will present their fall fashions, including our beloved Dang boys. David Ninh, style writer for F!D LUXE with the Dallas Morning News will emcee and host. This is sure to be a great event with creative energy oozing out the seams! The Pin Show takes place this Thursday at 7 pm at The Door, formerly the Gypsy Tea Room, tickets are $10 and on sale at www.thepinshow.com. See you there!

Fashion design is art on the move. Many don’t think of fashion as one of the major arts, but I sure do. I salute the idea of the Pin Show and the work of Nichelson and Kim. It sounds like it offers new designers a place to get their work seen.
I have also suggested another way to allow all designers to get a break. Have an art exhibit that shows their sketches. Not every designer can afford to make the clothes they design. But they can afford to sketch it. It’s a way to allow all designers a fair break and allow the public to see new ideas in fashion.
Also I would suggest that if the government (city, state, or federal) would financially support art centers instead of specific art group grants, we could have a public center that had room for
both the events talked above..
One room could have pottery lessons, the next a model runway for the Pin Show, the next a concert hall with live music, the next a theater with live theater, etc. etc. All going on at the same time. And each helping to promote the other by being in the same location.
And speaking of fashion, how about doing a post on what I call the ‘American uniform’: white
t-shirt . blue jeans, white socks and sneakers. Pure classic clothes, Pure USA.
