After nearly a decade at the Dallas Museum of Art, John R. Lane is retiring at the end of this month, the museum announced today. Lane had run the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) for ten years before coming to Dallas in 1997. In addition to raising more than $150 million for the DMA’s endowment, capital improvement and program advancement, Lane helped get approximately 900 works in joint gifts to the DMA from three local, private collections (Marguerite and Robert Hoffman, Deedie and Rusty Rose, and Cindy and Howard Rachofsky) — a major advance in the museum’s modern and contemporary holdings.

Lane will be replaced by deputy director Bonnnie Pitman, who was designated by the museum board as Lane’s successor in May 2007.
