University of North Texas dance professor Shelley Cushman’s dance piece “En I Me” , a 30-minute work that premiered last year, was one of three works chosen for the south-central regional level of the National College Dance Festival. The festival is a biennial event that stages dances from about 30 colleges and universities across the country. This year, the festival will be June 4-6 at Miller Theatre in New York. The festival is presented by the American College Dance Festival Association.

En I Me is part of a larger work that brings mankind to a place of peace,” Cushman said in an artist’s statement. “Part I introduces war as senseless killing, while echoing all past lives lost in wars throughout time. The dance projects, to all future lost lives, the infinite unfolding of torn flesh that multiplies like nuclear fission.”

The music in the piece was composed through sampling and remixing works by Jesse Coulter and Brian Eno, as well as the sounds of the “Daisy Girl” advertisement. The ad became famous when it aired during Lyndon B. Johnson’s presidential campaign. The noises of guns, explosions, water, planes and sirens are folded into the music.

The local performance of En I Me (Part I Revision II) will help raise money to send the 12 dancers to New York City. The benefit concert also includes works choreographed by students. Dance alumni will present another work by Cushman during the reception after the performance.
