Flags on the Waldorf, Childe Hassam, 1916
The Amon Carter Museum is holding a poll — both at the museum and online — asking visitors to choose their favorite painting or sculpture in the museum’s collection. They’re publishing select responses in the museum’s Works of Art website page, which keeps an updated tally on the voting, and they’ll be featured in four Visitor’s Voice public programs in June and July.
Not surprisingly, given the Carter’s Remington and Russell collections, cowboys and Indians are faring well in “Decision 2008,” although I’m a little surprised, given the public’s tremendous affection for George O’Keefe, that she isn’t garnering more votes (“White Birch” is currently running third). Perhaps it’s because the O’Keefe fans have several strong candidates from which to choose and are splitting their support. Also, given the public’s love of impressionism (especially when mixed with patriotism), I’m surprised that this notable Childe Hassam (above) hasn’t appeared on the roster (OK, so it’s set in New York, give it a break) and surprised that there have been no votes at all for the exquisite, very Japanese-influenced Mary Cassat.
A pity the Carter didn’t include photography. Here’s my champ. Next time, perhaps they should narrow the candidate roster — favorite portrait, favorite landscape, favorite nude, favorite horse.
