Fans of the TV mini-series, Lonesome Dove may well be interested in Austin screenwriter-photographer Bill Witliff’s new picture book, A Book of Photographs from Lonesome Dove, with written contributions by novelists Larry McMurtry and Stephen Harrigan. Whole Earth Provisions on Mockingbird has the book out on display, which is how I came to notice it. The pictures were taken while the series was filmed on location, and Witliff shot them in grainy sepia tone, sometimes with a long enough exposure time that the action is blurred. So in many cases, they look like historic photos of a real cattle drive.
But for fans of Dallas-area theater, there’s another reason to give the book a gander. Included among the cast photos is a fine portrait shot of Matt Posey as “Jim #1” with a partner and a six-gun — rather desperate highwaymen. There’s also a double truck (that’s printer’s speak for a two-page photo) of actor Robert Uhrich and the performers playing the villainous Suggs brothers, all about to be hanged. One of them is longtime Dallas actor Sean Hennigan, sitting on a horse with a rope around his neck.
