Milligan Stables
Milligan's Stables isn't your average dude ranch or YMCA-style kiddie riding lesson venue. Patty Milligan and her late husband, Dale, opened their American Saddlebred Training Stables on Parker Road almost 40 years ago, and it is still one of the premier show barns in the country. Although American Saddlebreds are fairly rare compared to American Quarter Horses, there are over 80 horses in training or in the lesson program at Milligans.
Candee Carlson is the main lesson instructor, and she has been giving lessons for around 30 years, with riders going on to become successful exhibitors across the country, and even teachers themselves. The horses are personable, but not "plugs," and the staff is friendly and intuitive. You or your children will learn much about yourself, communicating with a large free-willed animal, winning and losing, perseverance, pride, responsibility, and come away with a good workout and exposure to an industry from a bygone era that most people never see. Definitely worth any difficulties in getting "in" that may occur due to sheer demand or busy schedules!
