Museum of Biblical Art - The MBA

Established in 1967, named the Museum of Biblical Art in 1999, the MBA, is an art museum in Dallas, Texas that is unlike any museum in the world. Nothing on its scale exists in the United States, making it a treasure trove for Dallas, and the world. Eleven galleries exhibit European and American art, Jewish and Israeli art, rare Bibles, and Biblical Archaeology; works include bronze sculpture, drawings, fine prints, and oil paintings.

11 Art Galleries and Other Attractions:

The American Art Gallery features American religious art from renowned artists like John LaFarge, Albert Pinkham Ryder, John Singer Sargent, Winslow Homer, John Marin, Mary Cassatt, and Andy Warhol.

Marc Chagall, a Jewish artist, with over 50 originals on themes like Moses and the 10 Commandments, Daniel in the Lion's Den, and the Crowning of Queen Esther….with a movie on the life of Chagall and his legacy.

The European Art Gallery features the McCreless Collection with items like a fresco from 1300s,gold and silver chalices and reliquaries, a Veronese drawing from the studio of Benjamin West, and an altarpiece from the School of Boticelli.

The Jewish art and artists include Jacques Lipchitz, Leonard Baskin, William Gropper, Jack Levine, Raphael Soyer, Max Weber, and Ben Shahn.

The Michelangelo Exhibit includes 12 Michelangelo Sculptures highlighted by an exact bronze original cast of Michelangelo's Pieta, authorized by St. Peters and the Vatican.

Pilgrimage pieces include the newly installed, life size, 40 foot long, Resurrection Mural by artist Ron DiCianni and the Tapestry of the Centuries Mural, a gigantic oil painting of over 350 events, figures, from Christ's birth until today by artist Vladimir Gorsky.

Rare Bibles and ancient manuscripts with highlights like the first edition of the King James Bible, a Coptic leaf AD 500, the Benton Gospels AD 950, and a page from the Gutenberg Bible.

The Sculpture Atrium features Frederick Hart installation of Rising Christ, Millennium Cross, and Ex Nihilo from the National Cathedral, and a movie…. Gib Singleton bronzes like the life size Pieta, Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and Bowed Cross (or Pope's Crosier).

The Art Restoration Lab is a working lab showing art restoration and how to restore damaged art by professional art conservators.

African American Art - Gallery section featuring African American biblical imagery and culture with artists like Lonnie Holley, Jean Lacy, Alberta Bell, and Arthello Beck.

Hispanic Art - A section of Hispanic art and traditional Hispanic religious imagery, examples include Spanish painter Alvar and Mexican artist Miguel Zapata.

Israeli Art Section ??" Discover Israeli art and artists from Israel such as Menashe Kadishman, Jacob Steinhardt, Agam, Moshe Castel and Marcel Janco.

Modern European Artists ??" Modern religious art from historic artists like Georges Rouault, James Tissot, Oskar Kokoschka, Bernard Buffet, Maurice Denis, Jacques Villon, Kathe Kollwitz, and Emil Nolde.

Jewish Ceremonial Art ??" Exhibits of Jewish ceremonial objects for Shabbat and Holidays, like Torah Covers, Seder Plates, Hanukkah Lamps, and Menorahs.

Women Artists ??" Gallery section devoted to contemporary women artists such as Pamela Nelson, Ginger Geier, Denise Brown; highlighted by the Altarpiece to Dallas installation by Nancy Rebal.

The Via Dolorosa ??" An outdoor sculpture exhibit of "The Way of the Cross" or the Fourteen Stations of the Cross, a series of life size bronzes by Santa Fe artist Gib Singleton in a garden patterned after an Italian villa. COMING IN 2013.
