Alexander Revier: Spangled

Ro2 is proud to present Spangled, a solo exhibition featuring new works by artist Alexander Revier. The show will run from July 2 through August 19, 2019. There will be an artist reception held on Thursday, July 11 from 7-10 PM at the Second-floor bar of the Magnolia Theatre

Alexander Revier’s second solo show at Ro2 Art focuses predominantly on color and form, saturating the entire picture plane with a miscellany of elements. Drawing upon his experience growing up as a second-generation German immigrant living in Irving, Texas, absorbing the influences and language of the diverse cultural makeup, Revier is interested in how visual art exists as a universal language. Spangled becomes a metaphor for diversity as the artist amalgamates and mingles unexpected elements, color and design together in a lively maximalist assemblage.

Artist Statement

As a child, learning how to read and understand language did not come easy by any means. Words and their meanings still look and sound funny, especially out of context. The word spangled sounds funny to me, particularly hearing it every day in school and not knowing what it meant.

I was born and raised in Irving, Texas, the 10th most diverse city in America. I am a second generation German immigrant, so many different languages and influences were infused in my psyche. Although I only speak English and nonsense, the most comfortable language for me is art. I believe color and design are the most universal languages.

“Spangle” cannot be used in America without its connection to the American Anthem, the Star Spangled Banner. Living in a German family in a city full of immigrants from every ethnicity, the word makes sense now. It is a metaphor for diversity.

This new body of work focuses primarily on one of our more universal languages, color, and shape. I am a maximalist so I generally work the entire piece and spangle the fuck out of it. I'm going to put things all over the place and try to overwork it and hope all the elements co-exist with each other.
