1:1 by Mihee Nahm

July 5 – July 24, 2019

RECEPTION: Friday, July 12, 2019 @ 6 PM - 9 PM

Artist Statement:

I create paintings and drawings addressing broad themes such as memory and time. The ideas I am interested in the most are the fragility of human memory and our constant desire to retain, alter, or forget the past. With these ideas in mind, I attempt to capture fleeting glimpses in my daily life that may or may not hold deeper meaning: an unreturned key, and leaves found on my late grandmother's grave, and etc. Certain objects or scenes around me catch my eye, and these images are painted through meticulous observation. Sometimes, several images are composited together intuitively to create a mood or tone that resonate with me at the moment of painting. Seemingly without effort, they become autobiographical moments hidden in layers of paint.

Artist Biography:

Mihee Nahm creates oil and acrylic paintings that reflect her desire to retain and/or obliterate the past. Born and raised in South Korea until she was sixteen, Nahm's sense of being a foreigner in the US for over a decade has led her to explore themes of memory, sense of place, and longing. Nahm holds a BFA degree from The Art Academy of Cincinnati, and an MFA from the University of Texas at Austin. She has exhibited work nationally and has been awarded an Artist Residency at the Vermont Studio Center, Brush Creek Foundation for the Arts and Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts. She currently lives and works in Grapevine, Texas.
