Carneal Simmons Contemporary Art is pleased to present Rainbow Riot at the Snowflake Ball, a solo exhibition of works by David Willburn. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery.
David Willburn's narrative abstractions are about finding solace in the margins; they are hybrid plans for structures of safety and isolation. In his paintings and mixed media collages he creates an imaginary army with weapons that are magic, horrors are used as tools for resistance, utopia is presented as something that is possible and real and earthly; pattern is a tool for organization, and experiences that seem impossible to understand are abstracted into a kind of order.
Born in Fort Stockton, Texas, David Willburn lives and works in Fort Worth, Texas. He earned an MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts (Montpelier, VT). His work has been shown nationally and internationally at venues including Dallas Contemporary (Dallas, Texas), San Diego Art Institute (San Diego, CA), University of Art and Design (Helsinki, Finland) Museum of Arts and Design (New York, NY), Union Gallery at University of Wisconsin (Milwaukee, WI), Museum of Contemporary Craft (Portland, Oregon), and Carneal Simmons Contemporary Art (Dallas, Texas).
