Symbolics, by Jose Maria Eguren

The Wild Detectives

At the time of its publication in 1911, Symbolics by José María Eguren shook the Peruvian literary environment and quickly gained an almost cult-like status among his peers. Since then, he earned the recognition of important writers such as Juan Ramón Jiménez, Gabriela Mistral, Cesar Vallejo and Jorge Luis Borges, as well as the deserved reputation of being an undisputed classic of Latin American poetry. Displaying a profound chromatic range in its delicate sensibility to colors and sounds, the poetry of José María Eguren reverberates with flashes of light and remains within us like an impressionist landscape, to be discovered and rediscovered with every reading.

This first English translation, long overdue, restitutes the figure of one of the most uniquely crafted poetic voices of the turn of the century and opens up a window to his untimely past.

José María Eguren (Lima, 1874-1942) was a Peruvian poet, painter, essayist and photographer. “A poet’s poet”, his unique style was influential for both Modernists and the Avant-garde during the first half of the twentieth century. His works have been published in Peru, Chile, Argentina, Venezuela and Spain, and have been translated to Italian, French, Czech and English.
