Brandon Thompson Exhibition: How You Luv That

Old Dallas Power & Light Building

Ro2 Art is proud to present How You Luv That, a solo exhibition featuring work by artist Brandon Thompson. The show will run from March 16 through April 6, 2019. There will be an opening reception held Saturday, March 16, from 7 p.m. -10 p.m. at the Ro2 Art Downtown Pop-Up located at the Dallas Power & Light Building at 1508 Commerce Street in Downtown Dallas.

In his first solo exhibition at Ro2 Art, artist Brandon Thompson paints the neighborhoods and culture he grew up in, referencing the slang, music, fashion, heroes and everyday events in South Dallas. How You Luv That is a body of work full of life and energy as colorful scenes of everyday life create visual stories hinting toward inside jokes, biblical stories, and African-American history.

Artist Statement

My practice consists of two-dimensional and three-dimensional works. I produce acrylic and oil paintings, also clay sculptures. My work is inspired by the neighborhoods and culture I grew up in. That being the South Dallas County area, and the lifestyles of those neighborhoods. Taking references from the fashion and hairstyles, slang, music, heroes, and everyday events, then reimagining them into colorful paintings and sculptures. Some of my references come from biblical stories, inside jokes, African-American history and literature. My goal is to create visual stories from my perspective in a way that can be identified by those within my culture. Also to change the negative connotation that may be associated by some people that see the culture (slang, sagging pants, rap music) from the outside. I found through art I can clearly bring light to things I loved and considered very important parts of my life that has made me into the person I am today.
