The Wild Detectives

Your favorite intersectional feminist, poet, Melania-Luisa Marte, is giving insight with, COMMU.N.I.T.Y, a monthly talk show that brings you different perspectives and hot takes on culture, community, and the current political climate. Our special guest, Sherrie Zantea is the CEO of Dallas Poetry Slam.  Our theme for this talk will be “Woman Of The World” we will be discussing women in leadership, turning your passions into careers, and navigating the poetry scene in Dallas and across the country.

Sherrie Zantea​ (Candy) has been writing and performing poetry for over 25 years. Candy made the 2007 Dallas Poetry Slam Team, and to date has been on 11 poetry slam teams, the first woman to coach 7 and she is the current CEO of the Dallas Poetry Slam Organization. Candy is a teaching artist and teaches creative writing in the DFW School Districts. She recently created a teaching artist program for Dallas Poetry Slam and works for and/or partnered with Young DFW Writers LTAB (Louder Than a Bomb) Program, Rockwall ISD and Lancaster ISD. She is the current Teaching Artist Lead Instructor for the The Writer’s Garret “Rail Writers” program, and Learning Partner for Big Thought Youth Development Non-Profit and the Dallas Independent School District.

In addition to her poetry slam experience, she has added to her resume 2017 and 2018 Host City Coordinator of the Women of the World Poetry Slam and Individual World Poetry Slam Event Coordinator with Poetry Slam Inc.

COMMU.N.I.T.Y, is a monthly show that aims to simplify diversity and inclusion through the lens of Activists, Entrepreneurs and Artists of Color in the Dallas area. Our special guests will give insight into their activism, entrepreneurship and how they use their talents to improve their communities and what we can do to help them continue their efforts.

Melania-Luisa Marte is a first generation American. She was born in the Bronx and raised in the Lower East Side of New York City. Her multi-cultured upbringing inspires her to write about navigating the world as a native Spanish speaker of Afro-Dominican descent. She has performed, featured, and competed in cities across the country. She is the founder of “Melanin Goddess” a Dallas based feminist healing collective for WOC.
