John Neal Phillips: We Came from Backyards

John Neal Phillips: We Came From Backyards is a conceptual installation depicting a fictional history using single-channel videos and pseudo-artifacts related to the theme of the exhibition.

John Neal Phillips is an artist, historian, author, and Tarrant County college Associate Professor of Art born in Houston, Texas.  He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in art, a Master of Arts degree in art (emphasis on painting and printmaking), and a Master of Fine Arts degree in art (emphasis on photography and filmmaking as art). 

As an artist, Phillips has participated in projects funded by the Texas Commission for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts, among others.  

As a historian, Phillips has authored two books and has had numerous articles, essays, and photographs published in periodicals, anthologies, and other works, including American History, Literary Dallas, and Encyclopedia of the Great Plains.  To date, Phillips has also appeared in twenty-one British, Canadian, and American television documentaries, including productions for the BBCPBS’“The American Experience” and The National Geographic Channel.
