West African Drum and Dance


South Dallas Cultural Center

Students in the West African dance class will learn steps and movements that have been used for hundreds of years to celebrate happiness, rites of passage, planting and harvesting and specific dances to overcome hardships in their lives. 

Drummer will learn the basic tones of the Djembe and Dunun drums as well as intricate rhythms and songs and their significance. The relationships between the drums and the dance is dynamic, with drummers responding to the dancers in energy, melody and speed of play.
