DFW Brothers Unite to Present Holiday Concert

VOICES of Fort Worth is excited to announce the addition of a third-holiday concert in Dallas this year. Founder and Artistic Director Dr. Jerry Bierschenk will collaborate with his brother, Rev. Stephen Bierschenk, to present a Christmas concert at Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe in the Dallas Arts District, where Stephen currently serves as rector. Dallas’ oldest parish, this High Victorian Gothic cathedral is home to the largest cathedral congregation in the United States with 25,000 registered households. VOICES is honored to perform its only free Christmas concert of the season here on Sunday, Dec. 2, at 6:30 p.m.

This is not the first time the brothers have partnered to bring their Fort Worth singers and Dallas congregations together. Slightly less than a year apart, the Dallas Fort Worth natives are the eldest of fourteen children from an exceptionally musical family. Formerly the Artistic Director of the Texas Boys Choir, Jerry directed those young singers in performance at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Dallas during Stephen’s tenure at that parish. The pastor often sings during mass. When the first of the fourteen Bierschenk children passed away in 2017, the rest of the family collaborated in a musical tribute at his funeral. Stephen officiated, Jerry sang a solo, and the rest of their siblings banded together as a chorus and band to honor him.

Highlights of the VOICES 2018 holiday concert lineup include a tribute to fellow hometown a cappella ensemble Pentatonix. The Fort Worth singers will perform an arrangement of the grammy-winning Arlington group’s upbeat African-inspired rendition of O Come, All Ye Faithful from their certified platinum 2016 album, A Pentatonix Christmas. True to form, however, the VOICES concert will span the spectrum of musical genres. In addition to catchy pop numbers, the chorus will also stir souls with ethereal sacred selections such as Daniel Elder’s O Magnum Mysterium, a challenging piece that only groups of this caliber can perform.

VOICES at the Cathedral will last approximately 90 minutes and include an intermission. For more information, call 817-713-4536.
