Books & Beyond

Nicholson Memorial Library System - Central Library

Children ages 6 through 12 can participate in activities based on the popular I Survived book series at the Nicholson Memorial Library System’s Books and Beyond program. The event takes place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Central Library.

Books and Beyond consists of book discussions and activities related to monthly themes. Each theme incorporates concepts from STEAM learning: science, technology, engineering, art, and math. Children use their imaginations to explore the themes and complete the activities, all while socializing with others their age and having fun.

Participants at the November event can visit activity stations related to three books in the I Survived series: I Survived the Sinking of the Titanic, 1912; I Survived the San Francisco Earthquake, 1906; and I Survived the Destruction of Pompeii, AD 79. The Titanic station will challenge attendees to construct a boat out of aluminum foil and add weights until it sinks. The Earthquake station will feature a “shake table,” where children will build structures out of Lego® bricks, then see if they are earthquake resistant. Library staff will assist participants in creating an active volcano at the Pompeii station.

The Central Library is located at 625 Austin St., in Downtown Garland. Due to ongoing construction, event locations are subject to change.
