SP/N GALLERY at the UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS DALLAS ANNOUNCES

“MAKER’S MARK - The Masterful Drawings of Karl Umlauf “

October 5 – November 10, 2018

Opening Reception Friday, October 5, 6:30 - 8:30 pm.

The University of Texas at Dallas’ SP/N Gallery is unveiling a retrospective exhibition of 50 years of drawings by renowned Texas Artist, former professor, Texas A&M Commerce and Baylor professor emeritus, Karl Umlauf.  These signature works explore the expansive nature of drawing, its diversity of application, and its evolving stylization as an engaging medium.

“Like aged whiskey in a barrel, Umlauf’s drawings have a distinct note of proprietary richness that summon the traits of an old master’s execution,” said Greg Metz, director of the SP/N gallery at UT Dallas. “With a pronounced blend of sweet, tannic, along with earthy tooth and fluid space, this complex, flavorful collection reflects on this Texas visionary’s captured moments of time, place, atmosphere and matter.”

Included in the exhibition will be works dating back to the 60s when Umlauf was an up-and-coming abstract naturalist painter out of Cornell University. Also featured will be his preparatory drawings that accompanied the radical departure into his infamous “vacuum-formed” series work of the 70s.

This attention led to invitations by gas and oil companies to pursue reclamation site proposals at their excavation sites, resulting in drawings that would inspire his 80s land formation paper castings lifted from large clay drawings.

Umlauf’s work in the 1990s became the embodiment of a more humanistic personal approach.

“His assemblage, memorial and shrine series produced innovative, dynamic combinations of drawn and sculpted ensembles that reflected his travels to the Texas borderlands, Warsaw concentration camps, and historical sites such as Notre Dame Cathedral - where his drawings breathe imaginary life into its guardian gargoyles,” Metz said.

“Umlauf’s work demonstrates a mastery of draftsmanship in its variety of mediums, a progressive inquiry into the aesthetic beauty of natural forms and human industry while never letting go of the spirit of drawing as a language- in and of its own making,” Metz said.
