Rachael Small is the director of publicity at Europa Editions, where she also occasionally edits translations from the Spanish and French. Before finding her home at Europa, she taught English in France and French in Mexico, as well as rhetoric and publishing and French cinema in Iowa. She has an MFA in literary translation from the University of Iowa and studied French literature and creative writing at Bard College. Her translation of Abdellah Taïa’s Another Morocco was published by Semiotext(e) in 2017, and she has published shorter translations in The Buenos Aires Review, Anomalous Press, and other independent literary magazines.
Terrie Akers is the marketing director at Other Press. She joined the company in 2004 as a publishing assistant, and since then has held positions in publicity, social media management, and digital marketing, dabbling in editorial and design along the way. She’s proud and grateful to be a part of the vibrant indie publishing community, and serves on the steering committee of the Independent Publishers Caucus. She graduated from New York University what seems like a really, really long time ago with a degree in English lit and creative writing, and is currently trudging her way towards a graduate degree in international studies.
Akers and Small will recount the compelling and often bizarre stories of their companies’ founding, their successes, flops, and forthcoming hits. The conversation and Q&A to follow will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the world of publishing, translation, and global literature.
