Europa Editions and Other Press Are Coming To Town

The Wild Detectives

Rachael Small, Director of Publicity at Europa, and Terrie Akers, Director of Marketing at Other Press will be appearing at The Wild Detectives on October 9, 2018—a wine- and literature-fueled bacchanal for booklovers with two of the best indie publishers in the land.

Since its first publication in 2005, Elena Ferrante’s The Days of AbandonmentEuropa Editions has grown to become one of America’s most esteemed and successful independent publishers. Founded by two trailblazing Italian publishers, Sandro Ferri and Alessandra Ozzola, Europa is known for its distinctive and irresistible design and for its pioneering work publishing writers from around the world. Get the inside scoop on Europa’s bestsellers like The Elegance of the Hedgehogby Muriel Barbery, the Neapolitan Novels by Elena Ferrante, Christelle Dabos’ literary fantasy A Winter’s Promise, and Jane Gardam’s Old Filth trilogy, and hear about what’s coming next.

Other Press attracts authors who are guided by a passion to discover the limits of knowledge and imagination. We publish novels, short stories, poetry, and essays from around the world that represent literature at its best. Our nonfiction books include history, current events, popular culture, and memoirs that explore how psychic, cultural, historical, and literary shifts inform our vision of the world and of each other.

Rachael Small is the director of publicity at Europa Editions, where she also occasionally edits translations from the Spanish and French. Before finding her home at Europa, she taught English in France and French in Mexico, as well as rhetoric and publishing and French cinema in Iowa. She has an MFA in literary translation from the University of Iowa and studied French literature and creative writing at Bard College. Her translation of Abdellah Taïa’s Another Morocco was published by Semiotext(e) in 2017, and she has published shorter translations in The Buenos Aires ReviewAnomalous Press, and other independent literary magazines.

Terrie Akers is the marketing director at Other Press. She joined the company in 2004 as a publishing assistant, and since then has held positions in publicity, social media management, and digital marketing, dabbling in editorial and design along the way. She’s proud and grateful to be a part of the vibrant indie publishing community, and serves on the steering committee of the Independent Publishers Caucus. She graduated from New York University what seems like a really, really long time ago with a degree in English lit and creative writing, and is currently trudging her way towards a graduate degree in international studies.

Akers and Small will recount the compelling and often bizarre stories of their companies’ founding, their successes, flops, and forthcoming hits. The conversation and Q&A to follow will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the world of publishing, translation, and global literature. A rare chance to meet two representatives from publishing houses that are among the leaders of an indie press renaissance in this country, this is an ideal event for fiction and mystery readers of all types, book club leaders, translators, aspiring authors, and Euro-philes!
