PolaCon Present: Project Barbatype, a Tintype Talk, Demo & Q&A

Patterson-Appleton Arts Center

Watch one of the largest mobile cameras in the world in action. Instant film cameras come in many shapes and sizes, but few, if any, are so big that several people can fit inside or need to be oriented with a half-ton truck. Come experience the magic of optics from the inside of the trailer Camera and learn about ultra-large-format photography and mobile darkroom setups with Ian Kasnoff. Instant film has been commercially available as small as 35mm-frame-sized photos (Polaroid iZone ’99-2006) to the familiar 3.5x4.2-inch integral film frames to larger 4×5 and 8×10 images, and many think of the photos produced by the famous 20×24 Polaroid cameras as the largest-of-large-format instant photographs, but artist, photographer and movie production designer Ian Kasnoff converted a 16-foot-long enclosed trailer into a “Polaroid camera on steroids” by making the inside light-tight and attaching a lens and adding a traditional wet darkroom for developing the images. Inside the mobile camera obscura, a movable frame holds light-sensitive photographic paper for capturing images up to 33.5 by 42 inches. The whole process from exposure to print takes 6 to 7 minutes.

This free event is a part of Day III of PolaCon- an annual 3-day convention devoted to analog instant photography. For more information on the free convention, visit http://instantfilmsociety.com/
