After growing up in an insular, conservative town in New Jersey, New York Times Magazine contributing writer Suzy Hansen embraced the opportunity to live and write in Istanbul for two years. Eager to immerse herself in the politics and culture of the country where her literary hero, James Baldwin, once found solace, Hansen’s journey of discovery didn’t go as expected. She unintendedly fell victim to an attitude she believes many Americans default into during their first months abroad—feeling superior to everyone around them. Hansen’s growing pains—specifically, her awareness and understanding of the harsh realities of American exceptionalism—are the heart of her stunning first book, Notes on a Foreign Country: An American Abroad in a Post-American World.

The New York Times has praised it as “A deeply honest and brave portrait of an individual sensibility reckoning with her country’s violent role in the world.”

Winner of the Overseas Press Club of America’s Cornelius Ryan Award and a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Nonfiction, Notes on a Foreign Country is a deeply personal political memoir. “I was reluctant to write a book this personal, but I felt that I’d be wagging my finger if I didn’t bring the reader along with me and let them know that I was realizing this ignorance, this unawareness I had about the world, this lack of consciousness or this lack of responsibility,” she reveals.

Join us as Hansen shares her moving reflection on America’s place in a world grappling with grave national and global turmoil.
