Playing with Chess

Irving Arts Center

Organized by Future Akins, associate professor art at Texas Tech University, Playing with Chess features art related to the game of chess by an eclectic group of 22 artists from the metro areas of Dallas/Ft. Worth, Houston, the Valley and West Texas. The work includes creations of glass, clay, collage, assemblage, painting and metal.

The exhibition pays homage to a little-known show that opened in December of 1944 at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York City. Titled The Imagery of Chess, it was conceived by gallery owner Levy, chess master and Dadaist Marcel Duchamp and the Surrealist painter and sculptor Max Ernst. It included chess-inspired artwork by over 30 artists, including Alexander Calder, May Ray, André Breton, Robert Motherwell and John Cage who would emerge as significant figures in the second half of the 20th century.

Playing with Chess continues the tradition of this unique collaboration and conflation of art, chess, history, and culture.
