In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, you are invited to heal and be healed through art and musical therapies including a hands-on arts project, dance performances from TWU, UNT, Moore Street Baptist Church, and local African American churches, as well a reading of an original poem by Kalilah Coulter. Artist and Professor of Studio Art in the College of Visual Arts and Design at the University of North Texas Annette Lawrence will unveil one of her diary entry works made for DCFOF that depicts the percentage of African American victims residing in the Friends of the Family shelter from 2001-2017. The evening will culminate in the inaugural performance of Lorrie’s Joy, a choir of survivors and advocates of sexual and domestic violence.

The Our Community Matters program at Friends of the Family focuses on engaging the African American community and bringing increased awareness to the resources available for victims of domestic violence. Statistically, African American women are 35% more likely to experience domestic violence than women of other races.
