PRESS RELEASE:

David Crismon // New Works

David Crismon, a long time Gallery artist (12 shows to date not including group exhibitions) is returning with a color-packed show of New Works. These paintings taken from famous historical works of art are a result of his endless re-investigation, alteration, splicing and deleting, resulting in unique contemporary paintings that recognize from whence they came. Crismon states, "By re-constructing images from the past: my intention is to accentuate the changes and distortions that can occur". His interest in history and applications of the new presentation is in sharp contrast with its traditional style of painting. “I pay homage and encapsulate the impact technology has made on how we translate and interpret history as well as modern experiences”.  What you will find most new in this body of work? Neon. Bold pinks and screaming yellows. Although he is a long-time veteran of the “traditional” painting scene, these 2018 renditions are anything but traditional.

Jeri Ledbetter // ALL’APERTO

Abstract painter, Jerri Ledbetter lives on the Mississippi River. Her curiosity and the oddities that this environment brings to her is both compelling and inspiring. The juxtaposition of living on “Mud Island” a man-made island on the Mississippi in Memphis and seeing the homes, fencing and cobblestones, all striving daily to survive with the water, wind and natural vegetation is the thought behind her paintings. This contrast between nature and industry is what Ledbetter finds as her inspiration. She comments that "Rather than paint a realistic landscape or figure, for example I let paint and pencil, instruments cast from natural objects by industry paint the surface, much like wind and water toiling against the works of man." Ledbetter’s minimal abstract paintings are sublime, meditative and at the same time evoke energy and always a sense of movement.

Danna Ruth Harvey // The Sparrows

This latest body of work, 7 paintings total, all 48 x 36, is called The Sparrows. While on the surface this work is seemingly all about birds, the various expressions and studies of them in her medium, oil, wax and paper on panel. But in truth this body of work is so much more. In her words, “I don’t think my paintings are about trees, flowers, or sparrows, even though I know they may be all that some will see. I use these images to carry my content, because like many other living things in God’s Creation, they are beautiful and willing metaphors for our human condition including all our varied emotions. This is what I am interested in describing. Especially in my current work, I am drawing from my love of theology and philosophy. I don’t see art as indifferent to the mysterious and deep relationship formed by religion and our search for wisdom.”

This series is as much an exploration of the human condition as it is of her medium- a beautiful culmination of years of experience and willingness to continue to explore.
