Magical Moth Night

Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary

Experience the magic of moths. These insects are often thought of as being less interesting than their popular lepidopteran cousins, butterflies. But on this night, we’ll dispel this myth and show you the fascinating, flitting world of these winged beauties. Not only are they important pollinators, but they are also excellent indicators of the health of their natural environments.

Magical Moth Night will begin at 8 p.m. with Melanie Schuchart, one of our key entomology volunteers, giving an insightful talk about these amazing creatures. After the talk, our trail guides will lead you into the sanctuary to experience the Heard’s nature at night. Your guided hike will end at one of the observation stations, where you’ll be able to study moths firsthand through the use of non-lethal catch and release methods. The diversity of what you will find may come as surprise!

This event will also feature our new 4-foot diameter Magic Planet digital global display as it illustrates the night sky in a whole new way. Light snacks and family-friendly activities, such as face/arm painting and exhibit hall admission, will be included. Guests are also encouraged to check out the Moth Migration Project exhibit during their visit.

Children ages 18 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Hikes are at least an hour long and include varied terrain and may not be suitable for children under 5 years. Admission for toddlers and infants 2 years and under is free, but they must be in a carrier or backpack. Strollers are prohibited.
