Come join us for friendly fun at Kids In The Cliff storytime at The Wild Detectives on Sunday morning, when we ponder the sometimes-puzzling nature of friendship. These things can be just as strange for kids as adults, and in these three delightful books, readers of all ages can share in the surprising situations of the humans and animals in alien territory. Friend Or Foe? by John Sobol and gorgeously, somberly illustrated by Dasha Tolstikova is a stunning picture book from fall 2016 about a brave little mouse who simply must know if the cat who watches him every night is his friend. The ending is utterly surprising, and it is a moving exploration of the topic. Let’s Be Enemiesis a hilarious 1961 romp by Janice May Udry about two boys who used to be friends. James and John would not even have the chicken pox together now. Sendak’s classic illustrations are a total joy and bring a certain pair of bossy frenemies to mind. Do they make up? Well, wait, wonder, read and find out! Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen’s 2017 The Wolf The Duck & The Mouse starts at what surely seems like the end for another brave mouse, eaten in the very first sentence. In what reads like an updated fable or allegory, the mouse finds there is yet more adventure to be had in the stomach of his captor, where he is not alone! What is the true nature of friendship, and where do you belong? Enjoy yet another gem from the friends who dreamed up Sam And Dave Dig A Hole.

Kids In The Cliff is organized by Lanie DeLay, who has worked at Dallas Contemporary, the Dallas Public Library, Hamon Arts Library at SMU, at area preschools and the School For The Blind in Austin. She has written for Glasstire and Art&Seek, and she tutors children in early reading skills at Dealey Montessori. When she isn’t looking at art or reading with kids, she’s reading about art or looking for a new read.
It’ll be about a 45 minute read with something fun for the kids–that’s going to be interesting, we can’t wait to see what they come up with.
