Sammons Center for the Arts

Wycliffe Gordon, one of the top trombonists of his generation, opens the fall season of Sammons Jazz with a two-set tribute to The Big Easy and two of its best-known native sons and trumpet players, Louis Armstrong and Wynton Marsalis. Wycliffe starts the concert with a nod to Satchmo by trading the trombone for the trumpet. In the second set, he recalls the early days of his career playing New Orleans-style music as the trombonist in the Wynton Marsalis Septet. Joining him on stage are Sammons Jazz Artistic Director and Steinway Artist Arlington Jones on piano, James Driscoll on bass, and Andrew Griffith on drums.

Sammons Jazz is held at the Sammons Center for the Arts, 3630 Harry Hines at Oak Lawn. Tickets are $45 per person and include beverages, a light meal, and valet parking. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.; the concert begins approximately at 7:30 p.m. There are two performance sets of about 40 minutes each with an intermission between. Dress is casual.
