Drawing: Still Life

Oil and Cotton Creative Exchange

Immerse yourself in the careful looking involved in the tradition of the still life, or nature morte, a time-honored pictorial art form in which the artist's primary subject is objects, usually small to medium sized in an interior. We will look at still life drawings, prints and paintings from various historic and contemporary artists, discuss the symbolism of traditional still life objects and briefly note the still life's role in the hierarchy of two-dimensional pictorial genres. For the remainder of the class, you will do traditional timed drawing exercises such as blind contour, gesture drawing and extended drawings. Various traditional drawing media will be available for use
and experimentation, such as pencil, conte, charcoal, and pen and ink. If there is an object or set of objects that you would like to draw, please bring it. If it is oversized, please inquire ahead of time.

The workshop is geared for all levels of experience from first-timers to experienced artists looking for a classroom style brush up.
