Moncrief Cancer Institute shows work by Salma Abedin Prithi

Innovative Bangladeshi photographer captures vital relationships with candor

Moncrief Cancer Institute’s summer 2018 exhibition features photographs by Salma Abedin Prithi, an artist based in Dhaka, Bangladesh. This is her first solo exhibition in the United States. Dear Love is an ongoing body of work in which Prithi asked her subjects to stand in front of her camera in their own homes for a portrait with or without their loved ones. Her subjects would then write out their thoughts about their relationships, and these handwritten sentiments were transferred to the margins of the photographs. In cancer treatment, the support of family and friends is vital and these photographs serve as visual reminders of why these relationships are so important. They are about love, compassion, touch, family and home.

An opening reception will be held at Moncrief Cancer Institute’s second-floor gallery on Thursday, June 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. The curator, Daniel Bernard Gray, will give remarks on the exhibition at 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, and light bites, beer and wine will be served at the reception. The exhibition will remain on view during business hours, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. from  June 8 through September 7.
