Summer Breeze

Members of Dallas Winds join the chorus of New Spain for a leisurely and family-friendly evening to welcome summer.

Program of Renaissance to Baroque includes Gesualdo, Flexa, Gabrieli and Monteverdi and the Renaissance-styled Stravinsky Mass inspired by Mozart. The great music of the late Renaissance brought together religious and secular traditions as composers sought to find new ways of expression. We feature three Italians at the center of this evolution, and a surprisingly fertile Spaniard from Catalunya, Matheo Fletcha. Carlo Gesualdo, from Venosa, was a colorist, a mannerist whose edgy harmonies broke the harmonic bounds of the Renaissance. Claudio Monteverdi’s madrigals led him into the creation of a new form, the opera. And Giovanni Gabrieli, the Venetian organist, brought the wind symphony to an unusually high place in writing for the ample acoustics of San Marco.

The acoustics in the sanctuary of Zion Lutheran Church offers an exquisite venue to hear this music.
