In anticipation of National Cheese Day on Monday June 4th, please join us for a very special Kids In The Cliff storytime at The Wild Detectives. We will read Anatole by Eve Titus, the 1956 Caldecott honor book charmingly illustrated by Paul Galdone. As the world’s best taster of cheese, Anatole is an adventurous father mouse living in Paris who comes up with a way to earn respectability in service to the Duval Cheese Factory. In the night, he secretly sneaks in to sample the Brie, Roquefort, Port Salut and all their delicious cheeses, leaving notes on how to perfect them. In the process, the “mouse magnifique” enriches the company and his sense of self-worth.
For this very special story time, we will be joined by a special guest Jeff Foster. Jeff is a fellow Oak Cliffer who runs Cheese and Chutney, our neighborhood cheese shop on Davis with his wife Chitra. He will talk with the kids about cheese, why he loves it and the world beyond cheddar and string cheese. Like Anatole, the kids will even get to do a little tasting!
Afterwards, for children who are hungry for more, we will read Jon Scieszca’s short tale of The Stinky Cheese Man and end with the classic noir-style mystery Inspector Mouse by Bernard Stone. This kid-friendly vintage gem is illustrated by Ralph Steadman, best known for his artwork for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. What happened to the limburger?! “Play it again, Toothy.” Perfect cheesy fun for your little wild detectives.
It’ll be a 45 minute read followed by a short discussion with the kids–that’s going to be interesting, we can’t wait to see what they come up with.
All ages are welcome.
