Waves by Rene Rocha

June 1 - June 28, 2018

Reception: June 1, 2018; 6 - 9pm

When I paint, I seek to uncover my whole identity.  The painting process is a time to reflect on life’s events which have molded me into the person I am. Art is a personal and reflective process that lends itself to self-discovery. I communicate my most private thoughts and ideas visually through my artwork. I communicate these ideas verbally through my titles. I rarely communicate these ideas orally through my words.

Adoption, separation, and connection have always factored heavily into my artwork because I am adopted. Over the last decade, my artwork has focused on my separation from my biological family, and my connection with my adopted family. I use the art elements – line and color – to illustrate these concepts. I ponder my identity and often wonder who I would have become had my journey been different.

My current work explores my journey into fatherhood. The concept of the wave was conceived during my son Zachary’s birth. An erratic heartbeat due to an infection reminded me of water. More specifically waves, because of their up and down nature. I began to think about water, and what it represents. Water is the basis of life. Water has the potential to nourish and to be destructive. I find the wave to be a perfect symbol to represent my emotional response to this most important life ev
