Marking + Stitch

Oil and Cotton Creative Exchange

Saturday, June 2, 3 – 6pm
Location: 817 W. Davis #110 Street
Instructor: Abby Sherrill
# of Students: 4 - 10

Marks are sewn through our lives in many ways! In this workshop, students will focus on the use of stitch as mark-making. First, participants will explore the marks of daily life in form and meaning. We will observe, record and gather marks through photographs, tracings and rubbings. Next we will translate these marks to cloth and paper through stitching. Together we will explore variations of the running stitch, stitched knots and basic needle weaving. Students will leave with a handmade sketchbook to hold their findings and index their learned stitches.

*The instructor recommends that students bring printed color photos (on computer paper or photographic paper) of spaces that are meaningful to them from which to gather marks from.

Instructor Bio:
Abby Sherrill makes work in installation, drawing and sculpture to examine the ways in which we learn and
define the world around us. Through scanned imagery and manipulated materials, Sherrill folds text into layers of pattern and repetitive marks to elicit a distorted sense of movement.

Abby holds an MFA in Fibers from the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, where she continues to live and work.
