Kids In The Cliff - Women of the Skies

The Wild Detectives

On Sunday, May 27th, come to The Wild Detectives for an aviation and engineering storytime! This week, we feature Rosie Revere, Engineer, by Andrea Beaty, There will be various readings and extras for family fun.

For the month of May’s Women Galore festival at The Wild Detectives, we are featuring female authors, illustrators and/or subjects, including a trio of can-do books from children’s author Andrea Beaty in our Kids In The Cliff storytimes (see also KITC events for May 6th, and 20th). In 2007, after penning numerous kids’ books, author Andrea Beaty made her breakout turn as a children’s book author with her second book illustrated by David Roberts (inspired by a mutual love of hats, their first together was the lovely Happy Birthday Madame Chapeau, about a lonely milliner). For their star turn, which we read on May 20th, they created an overnight classic with Beaty’s Iggy Peck, Architect about an architecture-obsessed second-grader stymied by his tortured teacher. On Sunday the 27th, we’ll read their third collaboration, Rosie Revere, Engineer, this time about one of Iggy Peck’s classmates, Rosie Revere. Her embarrassing obsession is engineering, but she keeps it secret for fear of failing. When her spunky old relative Rosie the Riveter comes to visit, she helps her great-great-Aunt Rose toward her lifelong goal of flying and learns to persevere despite adversities.

As we did with Iggy Peck, we’ll follow Rosie’s story with the tale of a REAL kid who grew up to be a REAL flyer! Amelia Earhart (1887-1937?) was an American girl who became a world-famous daredevil pilot. This fearless female flyer relied on technology and wits to set records and win hearts. Her mysterious disappearance while doing what she was born to do has recently come back into the spotlight, and we will take a whirl through Earhart’s life story with Big People, Little Dreams: Amelia Earhart by Mª Isabel Sanchez Vegara, geared just for kids.

Finally, we will read The Glorious Flight: Across the Channel with Louis Bleriot, the 1984 Caldecott Medal winner about the trials and triumph of a French airplane engineer and pilot by Alice and Martin Provensen. Alice, who turns 100 this year, has been working in images for kids since the nineteen forties, solo and with her late husband, and is still hard at work! Afterwards, we’ll have fun airplane and engineering activities available for the kids to try. Join us!
