The Sunflower State Multi-Arts Camp

Schedule: July 16– 20, 2018 (M-F, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
Ages:  6 -12

Overview:  Follow the Yellow Brick Road to the Land of Oz. In Kansas, you’ll discover American Indian-inspired fiber art, recycled costumes, Vincent Van Gogh’s sunflowers and much more!

Fringe to Feathers: American Indian Inspired Fiber Arts
(Visual Arts/Fiber Arts/Design)
Campers will explore American Indian weaving designs and create a unique wall hanging using natural fibers, cloths, ribbons and beads.

Mixed Media Wizard of Oz Characters
(Visual Arts/Mixed Media/Sculpture)
With acrylic paint, felt, string, yarn, raffia, construction paper, scraps of material and other found objects, young artists will transform recycled aluminum cans into Wizard of Oz characters. (Each participant is asked to bring four empty, clean soda cans to camp on the first day.)

Loving Vincent Van Gogh: Sunflowers in 2D and 3D
(Visual Arts/Mixed Media/2D & 3D)
Kansas’s state flower, as well as Vincent Van Gogh’s famous series of paintings, are the inspiration for the creation of vibrant yarn paintings and a cool clay project.

Recycled Costumes
(Theatre Arts/Costume Design)
Students will create characters and construct costumes out of recycled materials inspired by the art, culture and history of Kansas and its neighboring prairie states. This class will conclude with a fashion show. Students may bring recycled items from home to use in their creations.

Intro to Piano: Following the Yellow Brick Road
(Music)
Piano instruction and performance opportunities for all skill levels are offered in this class. Listening lessons from the Wizard of Oz and Native American songs will be incorporated into daily activities.  Extra enrichment opportunities are provided for campers with intermediate or advanced skills.
