Land of Enchantment Multi-Arts Camp

Schedule: June 18- 22, 2018 (M-F, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
Ages: 6 – 12

Overview:  Stop and smell Georgia O’Keeffe’s flowers; take a creative writing journey through the Carlsbad Caverns; and immerse yourself in the enchanting rhythms and artistic stylings of Native American culture in the Land of Enchantment, New Mexico!

Georgia O’Keeffe’s Flowers
(Visual Arts/Drawing & Painting)
On our imaginary travels on Route 66 to New Mexico, we are going to stop and smell the flowers!  And a detour to the Georgia O’Keeffe museum in Santa Fe is just the thing.  Campers will learn to draw giant flowers and create their own watercolor paintings inspired by O’Keeffe’s famous designs.  What a great souvenir to remember our summer adventure!

Spin Me a Yarn: Landscapes and Animals of Route 66

(Visual Arts/Fiber Arts/Design/Social Studies)
Inspired by the yarn paintings of the Huichol people, campers will create colorful landscapes populated by native flora and fauna in the Southwest in the medium of yarn adhered on felt.

Pueblo Indian Sand Paintings: Stories & Legends
(Visual Arts/Drawing/Social Studies)
After reading and discussing a Pueblo Indian myth, campers will draw a scene from the story with geometric patterns and symbols to create a sand-painting inspired composition with pastels.

Creative Writing Journey through the Carlsbad Caverns
(Creative Writing/Language Arts)
This creative writing journey will take campers deep into the natural beauty and wonder of the underground worlds of New Mexico’s Carlsbad Caverns National Park through poetry, journal writing prompts and storyboard sketches.

Enchanting Rhythms
(Music)
Explore the role of drums and rhythm in Native American culture, learn about Apache, Navajo and other area tribes through their music and build Native American-inspired drums using large cardboard tubing.
