Join us for a conversation with Mexican novelist, poet and playwright Carmen Boullosa about her work and experience in raising a feminist voice in Latin-American literature and what the future lays ahead.
Carmen Boullosa (born in Mexico City in 1954) is one of Mexico’s leading novelists, poets and playwrights. Her work focuses on the issues of feminism and gender roles within a Latin American context. The prolific author has been praised by critics and received important literary awards. She has published seventeen novels, her newest novel El libro de Ana. Her second novel, Antes (Before), won the renowned Xavier Villaurrutia Prize for Best Mexican Novel. Her works in English translation include the aforementioned Before, Texas, and Heavens on Earth, all of them published by Deep Vellum Publishing; They’re Cows, We’re Pigs, Leaving Tabasco, and Cleopatra Dismounts, published by Grove Press; and Jump of the Manta Ray, with illustrations by Philip Hughes, published by The Old Press. Her novels had been translated in English, Italian, Dutch, German, French, Portuguese, Chinese, and Russian.
