Favio Moreno: Blinds

Eastfield College

Favio Moreno is a self-taught artist working in painting, printmaking, and design whose art cultivates Latin, American, and Pop Culture. Influenced by a childhood reared in Catholicism and by the vibrant colors seen in Mexico during family trips, his work is permeated with religious and cultural iconography. In a hard-edge painting style combined with a playful sense of color, Moreno utilizes his background to examine the differences and commonalities between societies and cultures.

In Blinds, Moreno presents his sculptures and paintings within the context of installation art. Employing a variety of devices and materials including light and translucent fabric, he guides the viewer through an interactive experience in the gallery that eventually leads to an altar with ceramic figures. These devices along with the iconographical imagery provide an experiential alternative to merely viewing the work on the walls and pedestals. The arrangement of Moreno’s installation references his Catholic upbringing while addressing basic human desires such as order, tranquility, curiosity, social status, and idealism.
