Great American Clean Up

Denton Civic Center

Feb. 6, 2018 - Denton, TX – On Saturday, March 24, nonprofit organization Keep Denton Beautiful, Inc. (KDB) will hold the annual Great American Cleanup (GAC), Denton’s biggest and longest-running litter cleanup event.  Currently in its 30th year, GAC mobilizes more than 2,000 Denton citizens each year to improve the beauty and environmental health of the Denton community. Volunteers of all ages and experience levels are welcome to participate but must register in advance by Monday, March 12 at 5 p.m.  Register online at www.kdb.org or by phone at (940) 349-8737.

Denton’s 2018 Great American Cleanup begins at 9 a.m. on March 24, with volunteers cleaning assigned locations citywide. The network of cleanups will be followed by a Volunteer Appreciation Party at the Denton Civic Center (321 E. McKinney Street) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with free lunch for volunteers, live music, kids’ bounce houses, and more.

Free cleanup supplies – including trash bags, litter grabbers, and vinyl gloves – will be available for registered volunteers during scheduled Supply Pickup Days, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 20 and Wednesday, March 21 at the Keep Denton Beautiful Office (608 E. Hickory Street, Suite 130, Denton 76205). Supplies will not be available on the day of the cleanup, so volunteers are encouraged to pick up supplies in advance and go straight to their cleanup site on event day.

GAC is part of an annual, nationwide litter cleanup effort led by Keep America Beautiful, and Denton is one of more than 20,000 communities that participate each spring.  At Denton’s cleanup last year, a total of 2,106 community volunteers cleaned more than eight tons of trash and recycling from the city’s streets, waterways, and public spaces. Litter cleanup events like GAC are important in helping to abate the effects of misplaced waste and litter in our community. Litter not only detracts from the aesthetics of a community but can also present health and environmental hazards. When litter enters streams and waterways, it can contaminate water sources and endanger wildlife.

In conjunction with GAC, the City of Denton Solid Waste & Recycling Department will be hosting a Free Disposal Day for Denton Residents, 7 a.m. to noon at the Landfill at ECO-W.E.R.C.S. (1527 S. Mayhill, Denton). Proof of Denton residency is required (i.e., Driver’s License). Road tires will be accepted free of charge (limit four passenger car tires). Appliances containing Freon will be assessed a $20 fee. No commercial or hazardous waste will be accepted through the Free Disposal Day.
