The 25th annual benefit concert for SMU Meadows will feature the critically acclaimed Meadows Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor Paul Phillips, in the presentation of three works. Opening the program is Samuel Barber’s short, dramatic Essay No. 1 for Orchestra, followed by his Toccata Festiva for Organ and Orchestra, an exuberant, celebratory work composed in 1960 for the inauguration of a new organ at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia. Stefan Engels, Leah Young Fullinwider Centennial Chair in Music Performance and professor of organ at Meadows, will be featured soloist. The concert concludes with Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1. Composed primarily in 1888, the dynamic work incorporates sounds of nature, folk music, a funeral procession and a heroic, triumphal ending. Proceeds from the event provide scholarships for the Meadows Scholars Program, aimed at recruiting the brightest and most talented students to SMU and Dallas. For more information call 214.768.2787.
