Join us for a curator talk with Christopher Blay on Thursday, April 12 at 5:30 pm. As Writer-In-Residence for The Art Galleries at TCU during the 2017 Fall semester, Blay interviewed and wrote about the work of visiting artists Larry Achiampong, David Blandy, and Baseera Khan whose exhibitions engaged with themes of identity and diaspora. His presentation of Black Borders: Artists of Color, Reframing Culture is a response to and a continuation of this conversation.

Fort Worth Contemporary Arts is pleased to present, Black Borders: Artists of Color, Reframing Culture, an exhibition featuring new video works and installations that both embrace and challenge notions of what it is to be a contemporary artist and a person of color. The practice of the participating artists navigates, supports and embodies this duality. What does it mean to be viewed as an African American artist, or a female artist of color? How do you make art that is your own within what is often considered a monolithic culture of Black art that is associated with the politics of race and social responsibility? These questions highlight the assumptions of audiences and the art-world expectations other artists, critics, curators and collectors.
Black Borders: Artists of Color, Reframing Culture opens at Fort Worth Contemporary Arts on Saturday, March 3rd, from 6-8 pm. Join curator Christopher Blay and the artists for this reception.
Christopher Blay is an artist, writer, and curator based in Fort Worth where he received his BFA from from Texas Christian University. Blay is currently Curator of the Art Corridor Gallery at Tarrant County College Southeast and reviews art for Fort Worth Weekly. His studio works incorporate video, sculpture and performance, and his most recent work “KWTXR” is based on the fictional character Kara Walker – Texas Ranger, who responds to historical violence against African Americans by law enforcement officers. Other recent projects include Cos N!&&@^$ Can’t Breathe at the Lakeview Gallery, The Seven Deadly Things at 500X Gallery, Satellites at Centraltrak Gallery and two ongoing public art projects in Dallas’s Coombs Creek Park and East Rosedale Avenue in Fort Worth. In 2013, Blay received the Moss/Chumley Award from SMU’s Meadows Museum. He is the first guest curator at Fort Worth Contemporary Art.
Fort Worth Contemporary Arts is one of two galleries that comprise The Art Galleries at TCU. Students and alumni of the College of Fine Arts and guest artists exhibit at these galleries. Fort Worth Contemporary Arts is located at 2900 W. Berry St. on the edge of the TCU campus in Fort Worth, Texas. Gallery Hours are Wednesday to Saturday, 12 – 5 pm, and by appointment. Admission is free.
