Amanda Russhell Wallace: Mourning Breaks

Cedar Valley College Art Gallery

The Cedar Valley College Educational Art Gallery is pleased to present a new exhibit of photographs and written word, by Amanda Russhell Wallace, Mourning Breaks.

Wallace documents and reflects on her encounters with her African-American family’s experience of grief, death, and suffering and how her representations of these family occasions sustain, pass on and build identity. These visual images offer “mourning breaks” and liberating insights into their mutual identity and humanity.  “Although some of these images depict my family in mourning, my portrayal of them lightens the expected burden.”

A Texas native, Wallace is a multi-media artist and documentarian, who is the Harnish Visiting Artist and Lecturer at Smith College, in Northampton, Massachusetts. She received her B.A. from Rice University in Houston, and her M.F.A from the School of Visual Arts in New York.  Her artwork is exhibited nationally and internationally.

Amanda Russhell Wallace: Mourning Breaks is on view from February 19 until April 13, 2018, with a public reception and gallery talk with the artist on Wednesday, February 21, from 3 to 5 p.m. The Educational Art Gallery is located on the ground floor of the E Building on the main Cedar Valley College campus in Lancaster, Texas. The address is 3030 N. Dallas Rd., Lancaster, TX 75134.  Parking is free. The gallery is open weekdays, from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m.
