Black History Month Celebration with Panel Discussion: Activist Photographers of the Civil Rights Movement


Irving Arts Center

The 2018 Irving Black History Month Celebration presented by the Irving Black Arts Council and Irving Arts Center includes the unveiling of the United States Postal Service 2018 Black Heritage Stamp, a performance by dancers from Carolyn’s Danceland from Monroe, LA, and in conjunction with the exhibition, This Light of Ours: Activist Photographers of the Civil Rights Movement, a panel presentation, featuring four of the five living photographers whose work is included in the exhibition.

Providing context to the historic images they captured on film more than 50 years ago, will be Bob Fletcher (Dunedin, FL), Maria Varela (Albuquerque, NM), Tamio Wakayama (Vancouver, BC) and Matt Herron (San Rafael, CA). Mr. Herron also curated the exhibition. The panel will be moderated by Leslie Kelen, Director of the Center for Documentary Expression and Art.
