Benjamin Terry: Limerick

Ro2 Art in The Cedars

Ro2 Art is proud to present Limerick, a solo exhibition featuring new works by artist Benjamin Terry. The show will run from February 17 through March 17, 2018. There will be an opening reception held Saturday, February 17, from 7-10pm at Ro2 Art located at 1501 S. Ervay Street in Dallas’ Cedars neighborhood.

In his newest body of work, Benjamin Terry draws inspiration from the poetic structure of the limerick. Known for his clever use of bright colors and bold shapes, Terry emphasizes the playful nature of his work by visually interpreting a literary device that is often considered to be humorous or even nonsensical.

 ARTIST STATEMENT:

I create paintings that oscillate between 2D and 3D, art object and functional object, high and low, fast and slow, smart and dumb, direct and labored. The space between is where all the exciting things happen. The strict rhyme scheme and transgressive attitude of the limerick has provided a structure for me to consider painting within the gallery space at Ro2; a study of how painting, drawing, and objects interact, create and manipulate relationships, and engage viewers. Limerick is ultimately about editing and displaying. In this exhibition, I faithfully subscribe to the 5-line (or 5-painting) AABBA formula of the limerick. It gives me the opportunity to closely examine the connections between individual paintings and installation space in an effort to create a harmonious group. To do so, I call attention to the relationship between the painting, the wall, and the floor, drawing parallels between the structure of the painting and the structure of the architecture.
