Miracle in Harlem

Southern Methodist University - Greer Garson Theatre in Owen Arts Center

As a part of Black History Month at SMU, the G. William Jones Film & Video Collection is proud to present a 35mm screening of Jack Kemp's 1948 film, MIRACLE IN HARLEM.  One of the final “race films" of the 1930s and 1940s, Kemp's only directorial effort is a genre mashup, combining elements of gangster films, musicals, and the depiction of day-to-day social and economic concerns of African Americans, issues and themes that would so often be ignored by mainstream, Hollywood filmmaking.  The complex plot involves two rival candy businesses, one small and family-owned; the other large, rich, and corporate.  When business turns to murder, everyone is a suspect.  Featuring great performances, including famed documentarian and African-American filmmaking pioneer, William Greaves, this film is one of the best works of the Jones Archive's Tyler Film Collection.

Taken from our vault, this 35mm print will be introduced by Dr. Rick Worland, professor at SMU.
