Pure Data is a free and open source programming environment for working with multimedia. Pure Data (or Pd for short) enables musicians, visual artists, researchers, performers, composers and designers to create custom software applications without writing lines of code. Users create functions by connecting visual boxes, called objects with virtual patch cables. Each object performs a particular task, which ranges from simple mathematical operations to higher level audio or video processes. Pd can be used to generate 2D and 3D video, generate and process digital audio, interface with sensors, MIDI devices and other external hardware.
Participants in this workshop will learn the fundamentals of programming in PD for working with sound via the Arduino microcontroller. This workshop assumes participants have some experience with digital or electronic audio production. The workshop, however, will assume that participants have not yet worked with the Arduino and will cover information on proper installation of the software, the addition of external libraries, and proper workflow with regards to saving files and associated media. Participants will also learn how to take advantage of Pure Data’s modular nature. This will include how to create one’s own custom code-objects and the development of simple graphical user interfaces. In addition, the workshop will provide participants with information on the history of electronic and computer music and the mechanics of digital audio. At the end of the workshop, participants will leave with several Pd patches and Arduino wiring setups that will comprise custom electronic musical instruments that can subsequently be modified to suit their own artistic needs.
