Dark Moon Poetry & Arts

Deep Vellum

Honoring the dark moon involves exploring parts of the self often kept locked away. It means transforming latent energy into something beautiful. This is the most powerful time to effect change and make art. Dark Moon Poetry & Arts exists to honor the creative feminine and non-binary powers of North Texas. We showcase poetry, music, visual art, and projects that can’t be defined by a single noun. We upset still air.

This month Dark Moon Poetry & Arts is two years old! Please join us as we celebrate by presenting the poetry of women whose poetry focuses on self-love, history, and ritual, with music and movement of the body that reminds us we all connected to the earth and moved by the moon. This month’s features are Cocoatlicue, Aimée Mackovic, and Hathor Hendrix.

Under the alias of Cocoatlicue (co-kwat-lee-kwei), Amy Zapien explores the relationships of time travel, catharsis, magic, personal narrative to healing. She experiments with visual and performing arts, rituals, soundscapes, installations, lighting, and illustration to excavate the ways in which stories are shared. Coco’s artistic process is inspired by her B.A in Anthropology from UNT, rooting her poetry and performance in ethnographic documentation.

Her most recent work, “ME VOY” (I’ll Go), was inspired by a two-week trip to her grandmother’s home in Mexico and weaves together poetry, soundscapes, and lighting to share their story. It was performed at SANA /// Art Gathering, a two-day multi-artist installation showcasing local and emerging Dallas artists.

She is currently collaborating with the Espinas Collective and Casa De Locos, and in the past she has displayed work in The Lawndale Art Center Houston, The Oak Cliff Cultural Center, and Casa De Locos. You can find her on Instagram, in both the spirit and physical world, or in Pleasant Grove with her dog June.
