Lecture: Comanche Marker Trees of Texas

Sid Richardson Museum

Discover how American Indians used trees as an early road map

Like an early road map, American Indians used trees to mark significant natural features such as trails, low water crossings, or camp grounds. Today, these old road signs are known as Indian Marker Trees. These Indian Marker Trees are the living witnesses to the history of a past civilization and their incredible way of life. Steve Houser is an arborist, founding member of the Texas Historic Tree Coalition, and co-author of the 2016 book Comanche Marker Trees of Texas. Join us as Mr. Houser shares some history about Indian Marker Trees as well as recent discoveries of Indian Marker Trees in North Texas.
