The Irish Texan: 'Banished Baby' Finds His Family

King of Glory Lutheran Church

Gene Autry grew up a child of the American West. But in the 1990s he came across adoption papers that revealed that although he had been born in Ireland, which he knew, he was not his parents’ biological child. Autry’s discovery led him on a three-year journey to find his birth mother and uncover his true roots. He ran into stonewalling by both the Irish Catholic church and the Irish government. In the 1950s, nuns had forced young unwed mothers to give up their babies, many of whom were “exported” to America via U.S. servicemen and their spouses, while others were “sold” on the black market. Autry’s search took him through a maze of contacts and false leads that eventually led to stunning results.
