Jose Vargas' Retro-Matico, curated by Cristina Medina


Oak Cliff Cultural Center

The Oak Cliff Cultural Center presents Jose Vargas’s Retro-Matico, a collection of art spanning from the late 1960’s to the present, curated by Artist and professor of Art, Cristina Medina. 

Retro-Matico will be on view December 2, 2017 – January 13, 2018 at the Oak Cliff Cultural Center, 223 W Jefferson Blvd., Dallas, TX 75208. The Oak Cliff Cultural Center will host a reception for the artist on Saturday, December 2, 2017 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. 

The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public. 

About the Artist and Exhibit
Vargas is an active visual artist who works with photography, prints, painting, and mixed media. Since 1992, he has participated in over 160 exhibitions in multiple venues. Retro – Matico is a retrospective exhibit of Jose Vargas’ artwork.

In addition to his visual work, Jose Vargas has been curating exhibitions for over twenty-four years in Dallas, collaborating with numerous organizations including the Oak Cliff Cultural Center, Bath House Cultural Center, and Latino Cultural Center. Some of the signature exhibitions that Vargas curates include the annual "El Corazón" and "La Virgen de Guadalupe (Our Lady of Guadalupe)” shows. Other projects that he has curated/co-curated include the Day of the Dead and Frida Kahlo exhibitions. 

Recently, he started an art exchange program with La Galería de la Misión de Senecú, an art gallery and museum in El Paso, Texas, providing opportunities for both Dallas and El Paso artists to showcase their work in a different setting. 

Vargas also served as the Gallery Coordinator at the Ice House Cultural Center in Oak Cliff, and continues to provide gallery assistance to the Bath House Cultural Center and Oak Cliff Cultural Center in Dallas, Texas while remaining active in the arts. 


About the Curator

Tina Medina is a visual artist and professor of art at Mountain View College in Dallas, Texas. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Texas Tech University and Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of North Texas. 

Medina's work has been exhibited nationally in exhibits such as Immigration, Migration, Movement & The Humanities at Arizona State University, as well as Women in the Middle: Borders, Barriers, Intersections at Walker’s Point Center for the Arts, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was selected by the Mexic-Arte Museum to be showcased in the 7th Annual Young Latino Artist’s Exhibition, and was also awarded a solo show at Women and Their Work Gallery, both in Austin, Texas. Medina has curated several exhibits including Ojo and Ojo Dos: Contemporary Latino American Artists of the Metroplex at Richland and Brookhaven Colleges and ELLA: Exhibiting Local Latina Artists at Latino Cultural Center. Medina was also a member of the historical Dallas artist collective 500X Gallery.
